QuickTip: Using Sound FX

Final Cut Studio comes with an extensive library of sound fx which are installed on the Macs in the workshop.  They come as "Core Audio File" or '.caf' files.  The easiest way to find them is to use the magnifying glass tool in the top right corner of the menu bar and search for the .caf file extension:

Click on "Show All" to browse through all the available sound effects

Double click the effect you want to open it in Soundtrack Pro and select 'Save As' from the file menu to export it as an AIFF file:

Finally copy the new file to your EditShare project folder and import it into Final Cut and you're done!

Internet in the Workshop

We now have internet access in the DMW!

Use the second row of iMacs to get online to watch Lynda tutorials,
download Sound FX or CG Textures.

Please don't use the iMacs for email / Facebook / online shopping .
These are public machines; remember, the next person using
them could get their hands on your private data!

You won't be able to access your EditShare drive while the iMac
is on the internet.  If you need to get to your project work before
you go online please ask a technician to help you.

HowTo:

Start the machine
It will log on by itself.
Click on the Cisco VPN client

Click on "mdxStudent-Wireless-CH"

Log in with your University ID
(NOT your DMW username)

If you don't have your Uni ID yet you can
request it from the Library help desk.

Remember to press the Disconnect button
in the Cisco VPN Client before you leave the
computer.  If you don't, you will get the blame for anything
dodgy the next person does on that machine.

Filming in Public Places

"Be careful out there"

Please remember that any filming you do in public places -- on the street, in parks etc needs to be approved by the local council.  Each council will have a legal department who should be notified before you begin production.

If you will be filming fight scenes or using dummy weapons you must also contact the Metropolitan Police Film Unit.
